There's not a lot to say about this group of pictures. They were all taken on one day in April 1989. Karen and I drove, with four-year-old Caitlin, and friends Steve and Linda Elfman, to Point Pelee National Park, where we walked the marshland boardwalk. It was a beautiful spring day, sunny and mild. Caitlin was a bit moody, alternating between sulking - because bored or wanting undivided mummy-daddy attention - and her normal sunny disposition.

We had moved back to London less than a year before. We knew Steve and Linda because Steve was a favourite cousin of Lesley Classic's. They had become friends of ours and were very good to us when we first returned to the city. Steve in particular was fond of Caitlin and she of him. They had a little ritual greeting, gently banging foreheads together whenever they met. You can see him interacting with her in the pictures.

Less than ten years on, everything had changed. Steve and Linda were split, Steve had moved to the States, and married Monique. And then his career took off like a rocket. He retired a couple of years ago as president of Sprint Networks. He and Monique now live in Seattle, where they settled years ago. We still see them occasionally, though not for a couple of years now.

What did we do after the marshland walk? No idea. Probably drove back to London and had dinner together.
